World Citizen: Journeys of a Humanitarian

Jane Olson has worked for many decades as a volunteer promoting international peace and justice and humanitarian work. She chaired the international board of trustees of Human Rights Watch, the largest US-based international human rights organization, from 2004 to 2011, having worked on behalf of HRW since 1988. She also co-chaired the Women’s Refugee Commission in New York and continues to serve as a commissioner. As the founding chair of Landmine Survivors Network/ Survivor Corps, she led that board for 12 years.

Jane served as a board member of Direct Relief in Santa Barbara and the Pacific Council on International Policy in Los Angeles, and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a board member of the National World War II Museum in New Orleans.

Extensive travels on behalf of various human rights and humanitarian organizations have taken Jane to Nicaragua and El Salvador during the Contra Wars, to the former Yugoslavia during the 1990’s ethnic cleansing of Bosnia, and to the former Soviet Union, including to the Caucasus countries of Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia during conflicts in the 1990s.

Other missions took her to many countries in Africa, the Middle East, Asia and South America to look at problems with refugees, human rights issues, HIV/AIDS, landmines and other post-conflict problems.

Life Lessons: Parenting though the lend of the Maasai People

Barbara Hoskins will be sharing her book, Life Lessons, that captures the key lessons she has learned over the past 15 years while going on walks with Maasai warriors in Kenya.

Dr. Hoskins is an educational consultant with a private practice in Pasadena, who has offered workshops across the United States and Canada. She started this part of her journey when she was invited to offer workshops to Kenyan educators, which began a fifteen-year relationship with the Maasai people. She has established the Maasai Cultural Conservation Foundation as a way to offer opportunities to the Maasai people, as well as opportunities for her friends here to participate in this life-giving process.

Proceeds of her book will be sent directly to Kenya, to support women’s businesses, and to provide health care and clean water for people in remote Maasai villages.
