Frequently Asked Questions

WHAT IS JULIENNE?

We like to say “Dine with Us, Shop with Us and Celebrate with Us”! 40 years in the community, we’ve evolved and grown organically as customers and circumstances evolve, too. But you can always count on fresh, seasonal and innovative foods served in the Café or for take-out in our Marketplace. The Gourmet Marketplace boasts an extensive menu offering of prepared foods for one or for many, including our “Everyday Classics Menu” and the “Weekly Specials Menu” which changes every 2 days based on a culinary theme, i.e. Latin Flavors, French Flavors, All American Flavors etc. It ensures both dependability and variety for our regular customers and new customers. The Self-Serve case offers many options, too: sandwiches, salads, soups, casseroles, snacks and some pantry essentials. Look in the Freezer for chicken pot pies, soups, stews, cookie and scone dough. The Bakery bakes everything in house: cakes, cookies, breakfast pastries including our signature Rosemary Currant Bread and Cream Currant Scones. And Chocolate Brown Sugar Cake! Of course, seasonal ingredients are always included in any menu. Our Catering Menus serve a variety of needs and seasons, both for business and personal events. Come the holiday seasons, it is an honor and a privilege that so many customers count on our food for their cherished celebration, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter and every holiday in-between (Valentine’s Day through NY Parade). Pre-ordering is strongly encouraged, but we always prepare “extras” for same day purchases. Our curated wine menu focuses primarily on European wines that pair with our menus. Julie the Owner loves the seasonality of wines and brings in small boutique wines not likely found in the bigger retail markets. AND, the Marketplace also is a curated collection of retail merchandise for the home and every season. Owner Julie certainly likes to SHOP, so look for the new, new, new every season. You will be able to find something for yourself, your home or office, a gift, a card or just find some inspiration on how to refresh your own particular space. Julienne is a beautiful space with built in historic charm. Set in a 1920s Spanish Revival building on a quiet tree lined street in beautiful and residential San Marino, the Café Patio has gas lanterns and marble topped bistro tables. The interior is defined by large floral displays, lots of marble, and old-world charm where the attention to detail is evident, making Julienne an intimate spot to Dine, Shop and Celebrate. Yes, we host private events for business and personal events. And finally, music certainly influences the vibe. We play classic French Jazz, Classical, and some Bossa Nova Lounge. During the Christmas Holiday Season you’ll hear traditional holiday music while you dine, shop and visit with other customers. It’s always like “old home week” during the holidays, and that makes for a festive and convivial environment. It’s important to acknowledge the contributions of the Staff which allows Julienne run smoothly and with care. Many employees have been with Julienne for 20-40 years, and that longevity clearly enhances the customer experience. Newer employees bring good energy and fresh perspective. When asked what the secret ingredient to Julienne food is, the Kitchen unanimously says “Amor!” We certainly embrace every season and holiday with food, merchandise and ambiance. We hope you will look forward to the change of seasons as much as we do. If you’d like to know more about our events, announcements, menus and more please sign up for our weekly emails.

TELL ME ABOUT THE CAFE?

Set in a 1920s vine draped Spanish building, the Café seating is on our covered arcade with comfortable overhead heaters and fans. Sit at a marble table; is is a very pleasant spot to enjoy a quiet time solo or with a few friends. Tables are “open seating”, and we ask that you find a table first and then come inside the Café to order. We will bring your order to the table. The vibe is upscale casual, convivial and welcoming. We ask for a mutually respectful environment for the enjoyment of everyone.

WHAT CAN I ORDER IN THE CAFE?

The Café Menu features some of our tried-and-true favorites over 39 years! Quiche, salads, sandwiches, soup and the ever-popular breakfast burrito and chilaquiles. On the sweeter side, try the chocolate chip waffles or the decadent Crème Brulee Bread Pudding. The Menu changes seasonally, too, so be sure to try the Pumpkin Waffles with Spiced Apples and Crème Fraiche during pumpkin season and Fruity White Sangria during the summer. And, of course, enjoy a mimosa or glass of wine, too! The vibe is upscale casual, convivial and welcoming. We ask for a mutually respectful environment for the enjoyment of everyone.

DO YOU HAVE HIGH CHAIRS?

No.

ARE DOGS ALLOWED?

Well behaved pets are welcome on the patio, but not inside the Marketplace. Out of courtesy and consideration to others, please keep your dog out of the walkways, off the tables and chairs, and from lunging at passers-by (both 2 and 4 legged!).

CAN I MAKE A RESERVATION?

YES, for Friday Night Dinners and Sunday Tea. The Café is Open Seating for breakfast and lunch, 7 days a week.

WHAT ARE YOUR HOURS?

Open Daily. Marketplace: 8:30am-5:30pm with extended hours during December.

I’VE HEARD JULIENNE IS A SUPERETTE.

What’s a Superette anyway? It’s a new way of thinking about an old concept, akin to a luxury convenience store, where you can find everything you need for gracious living in one place: prepared foods, specialty gourmet-(tinned fish! is the latest craze!) wine, gifts, cards, table décor, scented candles, faux flowers. You can pick up a new seasonal wreath for your front door, find a gift for a friend, shop for holiday home décor (not just Christmas, but truly, every holiday!) order a birthday cake, have a light lunch on the patio, pick up dinner and wine, and then stock up on frozen soups, pot pies and scone dough.  A Superette is highly curated by the owner, who is likely independent, local and on-site welcoming customers and showing their latest finds.

WHAT GLUTEN FREE AND VEGAN FOODS DO YOU OFFER?

Please consult our Weekly Specials for those items indicated with GF or V. • Most of our soups are made with homemade chicken stock, but a few are made with vegetable stock. • Look at the ingredient label on each container or ask our Counter Team about items in the Deli Cases. • At this time we do not offer gluten free bread. • Gluten Free cookie made daily is a delicious Pecan Cookie. • Almond Cranberry Biscotti (bag of 12), Chocolate Croissants (vegan too) are usually daily. • We make Coconut Macaroons typically Monday-Tuesday (and by special order). We do appreciate that GF desserts and vegan foods are an opportunity for us, and will continue to test and try new recipes, both sweet and savory.

CAN I HOST A PARTY OR CORPORATE EVENT AT JULIENNE?

YES! Julienne is a charming and intimate location ideal for small weddings, milestone birthdays, Celebrations of Life and more. SO IS THERE REALLY A JULIENNE?

Well, Julie is the owner. She is on-site and very involved. Her Mother and Founder Susan Campoy liked both the culinary reference “to julienne” AND her favorite bistro in Paris was/ is called “Julien”. But Julie still likes to think it was named after her. After all, she was the original Counter Girl back in 1989! (Quick history: Julienne opened in 1985 as a café with 5 tables, and then expanded in 1992.)
